Windsor is the most heavily constrained town in our Berkshire coverage. Conservation areas cover much of the centre, listed buildings are numerous, and the setting of the castle affects what is acceptable across a wide area.
None of that makes solar impossible. It does mean that design has to start with the designation rather than with the roof, and that we spend more time on consent here than anywhere else we work.

What we find on Windsor roofs
- Conservation area and listed status remove or reduce permitted development rights across much of the town.
- Rear roofs not visible from public vantage points are the usual starting point for a workable scheme.
- In-roof mounting sits flush with the tile line and is sometimes acceptable where an on-roof array is not.
- All-black panels with black frames and concealed fixings are worth the premium in sensitive settings.
Expect the consent stage to take longer than the installation. That is normal here and it is worth planning around rather than being surprised by, particularly if you are working to a deadline like a re-roof or a sale.
Where a scheme is refused or looks unlikely, we would rather tell you at survey than take a fee to find out. Sometimes the honest answer in Windsor is an outbuilding roof, or nothing at all.

Is solar allowed in a Windsor conservation area?
Frequently yes, on the right elevation. Conservation area designation does not ban solar; it removes some permitted development rights and makes visibility from the street the deciding factor. Rear roofs are the usual answer. We check your specific address and are straight with you about the likelihood before you spend anything.
What does in-roof mounting change?
The panels sit within the roof covering rather than on top of it, so the array is flush with the tiles instead of standing proud. In a sensitive setting that can be the difference between acceptable and not. It costs more, and it is far easier to do during a re-roof than as a retrofit.
