Maidenhead has changed considerably since the Elizabeth line arrived, and its housing now spans large Edwardian and interwar villas on the older roads, conventional post-war suburbs, riverside properties with conservation designation, and a good deal of recent apartment and town-house development near the centre.
The older villas are among the better solar houses in Berkshire — generous roof areas, steep pitches and, frequently, a rear elevation with a clear aspect.

- Load assessment firstWe check your main fuse, consumer unit and demand, and add load management where the supply needs it.
- Safe earthing, every timePEN fault protection or a dedicated earth, established at survey rather than assumed.
- Charge from your own solarWith solar and a battery, a solar-aware charger fills the car from your roof instead of the grid.

What we find on Maidenhead roofs
- Large Edwardian roofs give unusually good usable area, but many are clay tile or slate on older structures and need appropriate fixings.
- Riverside conservation areas restrict permitted development in parts of the town.
- Steeper period roof pitches perform well in winter, which suits households with high year-round consumption.
- Recent developments are typically apartments or town houses where roof access and ownership need establishing before anything else.
The larger period houses here often justify a bigger system than the household initially expects, simply because the roof can take it and the winter performance of a steep pitch is good. That makes storage sizing the more interesting question.
For riverside and designated streets, we start with the elevation rather than the array. A rear roof scheme that nobody sees from the road is usually straightforward; a front elevation on a designated street usually is not.

What affects the price in Maidenhead
Steeper period roofs mean more scaffolding and slower roof work, which is the main local premium — offset by the fact that you usually fit more panels.
Apartments and town houses are a different exercise entirely, because the roof is normally common property and the decision sits with the freeholder.

How an installation in Maidenhead runs
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Enquiry | You tell us the postcode, the property and roughly what you spend on electricity. |
| 2. Remote design | An indicative design and proposal based on the roof, your usage and your objectives. |
| 3. Site survey | Roof, structure, electrics, access and shading assessed in person. |
| 4. Final design and fixed quotation | A written specification and a fixed price before anything is ordered. |
| 5. Permissions and DNO | Any consent required, plus the G98 notification or G99 application. |
| 6. Installation | Scaffolding, roof works, electrical works and commissioning. |
| 7. Handover | Certification, monitoring setup, warranty registration and export tariff support. |
Many domestic installations are completed in one to three days once scaffolding is in place, although the actual duration depends on system size, roof type, access, electrical works and whether a battery is included. Read the full process.

Guides for Maidenhead property types
- Victorian terracesNarrow slate slopes, party walls, rear back-additions and scaffolding through a shared alley — terraced solar on its own terms.
- Pre-1920 homesSolar on Victorian and Edwardian houses: brittle coverings, irregular rafters, ageing electrics and planning sensitivity.
- 1930s semi-detached homesThe classic suburban semi — hipped or gabled roof, party wall stack, bay window and a side elevation that changes everything.
- 1920 to 1965 homesInterwar and early post-war housing: hipped roofs, clay and early concrete tile, central chimneys and modest incoming supplies.
Solar questions we get asked in Maidenhead
I own a flat — can I have solar?
Rarely on your own. The roof is usually common property controlled by the freeholder or management company, so it is a building-level decision rather than an individual one. Where a block does want to proceed, it is a worthwhile project, but it starts with the freeholder rather than with a survey.
Are steep Edwardian roofs harder to work on?
They need more scaffolding and more care, and that shows in the price. What you get in return is usually a larger array and better winter generation than a shallow modern roof of the same footprint.
