Who we are
Solar Fx designs and installs solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage and EV charge points, and looks after them afterwards. We work for homeowners, landlords, and businesses with a roof large enough to be worth using. A good proportion of our work is on systems somebody else installed — repairs, replacements, retrofits and health checks — which shapes how we approach a new installation, because we spend a lot of time looking at what fails and why.
We are a working installation business rather than a sales operation with a fitting arm. The person who surveys your roof is interested in rafter centres and the state of the covering, not in leaving with a signature that evening. There is no pressure to decide on the day, and no price that is only available before the surveyor gets back in the van.
Where we are based
Our registered office and operating base is 1 Loves Close, Burghfield Common, Reading, RG7 3NE, in Burghfield Common a few miles south-west of Reading. Surveys, design, scheduling, materials and aftercare all run from there. We do not have an office in every town on this website and we do not claim a team permanently based anywhere other than our own base — what we have is a working area we can reach properly, and a set of towns we are in most weeks.
Being where we are shapes the work. Reading, Wokingham, Newbury and the Berkshire towns are our home patch, and the housing there — interwar semis, post-war estates with trussed roofs, Victorian terraces with brittle slate, and newer developments with covenants — is the housing we see most often. What we install
Solar PV
On-roof arrays on tile, slate and profiled metal coverings; in-roof systems set flush into the covering; flat roof systems, ballasted or mechanically fixed; and ground-mounted arrays where the roof is not the right place for them.
Battery storage
Storage designed around how a household actually uses electricity, either installed at the same time as the panels or retrofitted to an existing array with a suitable inverter arrangement.
EV charging
Home charge points installed as part of a solar project or on their own, wired and earthed correctly for the supply type at the property.
Aftercare and repair
Servicing, health checks, fault diagnosis, inverter replacement, panel removal and refit for roof work, cleaning and bird protection — including on systems installed by other companies.
Commercial
Larger roof-mounted arrays on commercial and agricultural buildings, where metering, network application and access are usually the difficult part rather than the panels.

We work within approximately two hours of Basingstoke. These are the counties we work in, with the towns that have their own pages listed beneath each one. Towns not listed are not necessarily outside the area — they just do not have a page yet, and the postcode checker is the quicker way to find out.

We also travel into Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Greater London, Hertfordshire, Somerset, West Sussex, Wiltshire for suitable projects. For anything at the edge of the area we will confirm availability and any travel considerations when you enquire, rather than accepting the job and rescheduling you afterwards.
How we work
Every project follows the same seven stages: enquiry, remote design, survey, fixed quotation, permissions and scheduling, installation, then commissioning and handover. The order matters — in particular, no fixed price is issued before a survey, and no work starts before you have a written specification. Depending on the service and location, work may be completed by Solar Fx or an approved installation partner working to our specification. We would rather say that plainly than imply a fleet of directly employed teams covering seven counties. What does not change is the specification, the standards the work is held to, who issues your documentation and who you call afterwards — all of which stay with Solar Fx.
Survey before price
An indicative proposal can be produced from imagery. A fixed price cannot. We survey the roof, the loft and the electrical supply first, and quote afterwards, so the things that usually become variations are priced before you commit rather than raised once the scaffold is up.
One written specification
The specification names the equipment, the layout, the fixing method and the electrical arrangement. It is the document the installation is carried out against and the document any dispute would be judged against. Nothing is installed that is not in it.
The roof is roofing work
Fixings go into rafters, not battens. Penetrations are detailed the way the mounting manufacturer specifies. Defective tiles found during the works are reported before an array goes over them. Most of the repairs we are called to were sound electrically and wrong on the roof.
Estimates labelled as estimates
Generation figures are modelled, not measured, and depend on weather, shading and usage. We will show you the assumptions behind a figure and we will not present a projection as a promise.
Documentation that outlives us
Certification, test results, layout drawings, serial numbers and warranty registrations are handed over as a pack. A future buyer’s surveyor, an export supplier and any warranty claim all depend on it.
Answering the telephone afterwards
Aftercare is a service we sell, not a favour. If something is not working, there is a route to a diagnosis and a repair, and a complaints procedure if that route fails you.

Common questions
Where is Solar Fx based?
Our registered office and operating base is 1 Loves Close, Burghfield Common, Reading, RG7 3NE, at Burghfield Common just outside Reading. Everything is run from there — surveys, design, scheduling and aftercare. We do not claim a local office in every town we work in.
How far do you travel?
We work within approximately two hours of Basingstoke, with Reading and the surrounding Berkshire towns as our home patch. Beyond that we will look at a project on its merits and tell you honestly whether travel makes it sensible for either of us. Who carries out the installation?
Depending on the service and location, work may be completed by Solar Fx or an approved installation partner working to our specification. Whichever it is, the design, the written specification, the quotation and the aftercare route stay with us, and the same installation standards apply. We will tell you which arrangement applies to your job before you commit to it.
Do you work on systems installed by other companies?
Yes. Repairs, fault diagnosis, inverter replacement, battery retrofit, panel removal and refit for roof works, and health checks on existing arrays are a substantial part of what we do. We cannot claim under another installer’s guarantee, but our own work carries its own cover.
Are you certified under MCS or a consumer code?
Our accreditations page sets out what each scheme means and what we will publish about our own position. We do not display a badge until the certificate number, the holder, the expiry date and a public verification source have been confirmed, and where a certification is held by an installation partner rather than by Solar Fx that will be stated. Ask us and we will confirm in writing what applies to your installation.
