Our Installation Standards

What anyone carrying out work through Solar Fx is required to do, and what you are entitled to expect on your roof and in your consumer unit. Written down so it can be checked rather than described in general terms.

A solar installation is a piece of roofing work and a piece of electrical work carried out at the same time, usually by people who are better at one than the other. Most of the defects we are called out to repair come from that gap: an electrically sound system fixed through battens, or a beautifully set-out array wired with mismatched connectors. The standards below cover both halves.

They apply to every installation arranged through us. Depending on the service and location, work may be completed by Solar Fx or an approved installation partner working to our specification — and this page forms part of that specification. Roof works

The roof was weathertight before we arrived and it has to be weathertight when we leave. Everything else on this page is secondary to that.

Fixings and structural interface

This is where poor installations fail first, usually two or three winters after handover, and always expensively.

Electrical works

The installation is a generating set connected to a domestic supply. It is designed and tested as one, to BS 7671 and the relevant guidance for solar PV and electrical energy storage systems.

Isolation

Anyone who arrives after us — an electrician, a roofer, a firefighter — must be able to make the installation safe without guessing.

Cable management

Cable routed carelessly is the fault that turns up in year four, when nobody remembers what runs where.

Labelling

The test of the labelling is simple: an electrician who has never seen the property should be able to understand the installation from the labels alone.

Scaffolding and access

Nobody works from a ladder on a roof through Solar Fx. Access is designed for the elevation, not improvised on the morning.

Commissioning and testing

Commissioning is a set of measurements written down, not a look at the inverter screen.

Handover

The job is finished when you can operate the system and you hold the paperwork, not when the scaffold comes down.

Nothing above is invented in-house. Each item traces back to a standard, a manufacturer’s instruction or a network requirement.

Common questions

Why does it matter whether fixings go into rafters rather than battens?

A batten is sized to carry tiles. An array transfers wind uplift and dead load into whatever it is fixed to, and a batten fixing has neither the pull-out resistance nor the load path to take it. Fixing into rafters puts the load into the structural member designed to carry it. An array fixed to battens may look identical on handover day and still fail in the first serious gale.

Do these standards apply if an installation partner carries out the work?

Yes. Depending on the service and location, work may be completed by Solar Fx or an approved installation partner working to our specification, and this page is part of that specification. The same design, the same fixing method, the same testing and the same handover apply either way.

What happens if something on site does not match the design?

Work stops on that element and we come back to you. Rafter centres that differ from survey, a roof defect uncovered when tiles are lifted, or an earthing arrangement that turns out not to be as recorded are all things we raise, explain and agree in writing before continuing, rather than improvising and telling you afterwards.

Can I see the test results?

They are part of your documentation pack. The electrical installation certificate and schedule of test results record the measured values, not just a pass. If you are buying or selling a property with an existing system, those documents are what a surveyor or conveyancer will ask for.
