What happens after you enquire

Four steps between sending the form and holding a fixed price. Nothing is signed and nothing is charged at any of them. The full seven-stage process, including what happens on installation day, is on our how Solar Fx works page.

  1. We read it and come back to you

    A short conversation to confirm the property, your electricity usage and what you are trying to achieve, and to check the postcode is inside our working area. If solar does not suit the property, we say so now rather than after a survey.

  2. An indicative proposal

    We model the roof from mapping and imagery, sketch a panel layout, estimate annual generation and suggest an indicative specification and price range. It is labelled as indicative, because it is drawn from a photograph rather than a measurement.

  3. A survey at the property

    Roof covering and structure, rafter centres, loft access, shading, the consumer unit, earthing and the supply, plus where the inverter and any battery can sensibly go and how the cabling will be routed. Allow around an hour to an hour and a half.

  4. A fixed written quotation

    The design is finalised against the survey, then priced. Scaffolding, consumer unit work, additional earthing and anything else the property needs is in the price. The applicable warranty terms are confirmed in the same document.

What the quotation contains

  • A named specification: the panels, inverter, battery, mounting system and protective devices proposed for your property.
  • A panel layout showing where the array sits on the roof and how it relates to the obstructions and the roof edges.
  • An estimated annual generation figure, with the assumptions it was produced from stated alongside it.
  • The scaffolding, electrical work and any remedial work the property needs, priced as part of the scope rather than added later.
  • The warranty terms that apply to the products and to the workmanship, confirmed in writing before work begins.
  • A clear statement of what is not included, so nothing arrives as a surprise once the scaffold is up.

Useful things to have to hand

None of these are required to enquire. They just mean the first proposal is closer to the finished one.

  • A recent electricity bill, or a smart meter export, so the design is sized against your usage rather than an average household.
  • Anything you already know about the roof — a re-roof, a leak, a loft conversion, or a survey report from a purchase.
  • Whether the property is listed or in a conservation area, and whether any covenant or management company applies.
  • Whether you have or plan an electric vehicle, a heat pump, or anything else that will change your electricity usage.

No obligation, and no pressure on the day

The consultation, the survey and the written quotation cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. Our surveyor does not carry a contract, there is no price that expires when they leave, and nobody will ring you that evening to ask for a decision. Take the quotation away, compare it with others, and come back to us with questions. If you want a second opinion on somebody else’s quotation, we are happy to explain what is in it.

Any generation, saving or payback figure we produce is an estimate based on stated assumptions, and it is labelled as one. It is not a promise about your bills.

Common questions

Is the quotation free, and am I committing to anything?

The consultation, the indicative proposal, the survey and the written quotation are all free and carry no obligation. You are not committing to anything by enquiring, and you will not be asked to sign on the day of the survey. If the answer is no, that is a perfectly reasonable outcome for both of us.

What makes the quotation fixed?

It is issued after the property has been surveyed, so the things that usually turn into variations — scaffolding, consumer unit work, earthing, awkward cable routes, remedial roof work — have already been identified and priced. The price holds for the scope described. If something genuinely unforeseen appears once the roof is open, work stops and the position is agreed with you in writing before it continues.

How soon can you survey?

It depends on where the property is and how the survey diary looks that week. We will give you an actual date rather than a general assurance, and if a survey inside our working hours is difficult, say so in your enquiry and we will work around it.

Do you quote for battery storage on an existing solar array?

Yes. A retrofit depends on the existing inverter arrangement, the age of the system and the space available, all of which are assessed at survey. Our page on adding a battery to an existing installation covers what determines whether it is straightforward or not.

Will you give me a price over the telephone?

We will talk about ranges, and about what drives cost on a property like yours, so you can decide whether to go further. We will not give you a fixed figure for a roof nobody has looked at. A number produced that way is either padded or about to change, and neither is much use to you.

What happens to the details I send?

They are used to respond to your enquiry, arrange a survey and prepare a proposal. We do not sell enquiry data on to third parties. Marketing emails are sent only if you tick the optional consent box, and you can withdraw that at any time. The full detail is in our privacy policy.
