Solar Panel Bird Protection
Mesh and clip systems that close the gap under an array, why pigeons nest there, and how it is done without damaging the roof.
What bird protection is
A mesh skirt fitted around the perimeter of a solar array, closing the gap between the bottom edge of the panels and the roof covering. It is held by clips that grip the panel frame. Nothing is screwed into the roof and nothing is drilled through the panel.
That is the whole system. It is simple, and its effectiveness depends entirely on whether it is complete and whether it was fitted to a clean roof.
Why the problem exists
On-roof mounting holds panels a few centimetres clear of the covering, which is deliberate — the air gap keeps the modules cooler and slightly improves output. It also creates a sheltered, dry, warm cavity that runs the width of the array and has open ends.
For a feral pigeon this is close to ideal. It is out of the weather, out of sight of predators, warmed from above and undisturbed. Once one pair nests successfully, others join, and what began as a single nest becomes a colony over a couple of seasons.
The consequences accumulate in a predictable order. Nest material builds up and holds moisture against the tiles. Droppings stain the covering, then wash into gutters and valleys and block them. DC cabling under the array is pulled about. Soiling collects on the lower edge of the panels, where it shades cells directly — and because a shaded cell group limits the string it sits in, the output loss is greater than the soiled area suggests.
Where it is used
Anywhere with an established local pigeon or gull population, which in practice covers most suburban and town locations. Terraces and older suburbs where birds already roost on ridges and chimneys are the highest risk. Rural properties with no nearby population may never have a problem.
In-roof arrays do not need it, because there is no cavity — the panels form the roof surface.
How it is installed
The order matters more than the materials.
Clearance first. Any existing nests, accumulated material and droppings are removed and the area treated. Fitting mesh over an occupied or fouled void seals in the problem rather than solving it, and we are periodically called to roofs where exactly that has been done.
Then the mesh. Coated steel mesh is cut to the clearance height and clipped to the panel frames around the whole perimeter — bottom edge, both verges, the top edge, and any internal gaps between separate sub-arrays. A single unclosed section is enough to make the rest pointless.
Timing. Nesting birds and their nests in use are legally protected, so clearance work is scheduled outside the active nesting season. If we find an occupied nest during a survey, the work waits.
Suitability and limitations
Bird protection closes one specific gap. It does not deter birds from the ridge, the chimney or the gutters, and it is not a general pest control measure.
On a new installation it is inexpensive to include, because the access equipment is already on site. On a retrofit, access is the dominant cost, which is why it is sensible to combine it with cleaning, a health check or any other planned roof work.
Specification points worth checking
Whether the mesh is coated or bare galvanised. Whether the clips are stainless. Whether the quotation covers the full perimeter including internal gaps, or only the front edge. And whether clearance and treatment are included, or listed as an extra once the roof is opened up.
Warranty and cost
Panel manufacturers set conditions on what may be attached to the frame. A clip system that grips the frame without drilling stays within those conditions; screwing into a frame may not, and could affect a warranty claim later. This is a good reason to have proofing fitted by someone who works on the arrays as well as the mesh.
Cost is driven by array perimeter length and by access. Your quotation states the mesh and clip specification, the extent of the perimeter covered, and whether clearance and treatment are included.

These are the figures worth comparing when you are reading a quotation. The exact values for the products specified for your installation come from the manufacturer's current datasheet and are stated in your written quotation.

Where it works, and where it does not
Strengths
- Prevents nesting in the gap between panels and roof covering, which is otherwise sheltered and attractive
- Stops droppings and nest material accumulating on the roof and blocking gutters and valleys
- Protects DC cabling under the array, which birds and rodents will otherwise disturb
- Removes the soiling that reduces output on the lower edge of panels
- Clip fixing means no penetration of the roof covering and no drilling of panel frames
Limitations
- Adds cost, and on a low-risk roof with no local pigeon population it may never be needed
- Requires access equipment, which is the largest part of the cost on a retrofit
- Mesh is visible at close range along the array edge, though barely noticeable from ground level
- Does not deter birds from the rest of the roof — it closes one specific gap
- Needs occasional inspection; a displaced clip or damaged section leaves a way back in

Common questions
Why do pigeons nest under solar panels?
Because the gap is exactly what they want. On-roof mounting leaves a sheltered void a few centimetres deep, dry, warm from the panels above and hidden from predators. Once one pair establishes, others follow, and the space fills with nest material that traps moisture against the covering and blocks water paths.
Can I have bird proofing fitted to an existing array?
Yes, and most of the work we do is retrofit. The sequence is clearance first — nests, debris and droppings removed and the area treated — then mesh fitted around the perimeter. It has to be done outside the active nesting season, because disturbing a nest in use is an offence. The main cost driver is access, so it is worth combining with any other roof work planned.
Does mesh damage the panels or the roof?
It should not, and it will not if it is clipped. Clips grip the panel frame and hold the mesh against the covering without drilling the frame or piercing the roof. What does cause damage is mesh fixed with screws into frames, which can affect the panel warranty, or fixings into tiles, which create a leak path. If someone proposes either, ask them not to.
Will proofing improve my generation?
Where birds have been nesting, usually yes, though the amount depends on how much soiling had built up. Droppings on the lower edge of a panel shade cells directly, and a shaded cell group drags on the whole string. The larger benefit is avoided damage — to cabling, to the covering and to gutters — rather than the generation recovered.
