Solar Panel Removal and Refit

Taking an array down for roof work, extensions or repairs, and putting it back properly afterwards.

Why this is its own job

An array sitting over a roof that needs work has to come off, and the temptation is to treat that as a lifting exercise. It is not. It is a decommissioning, a storage problem, a coordination problem, and then a fresh installation.

Most of the difficulties we deal with come from arrays that were removed by someone who was not going to be putting them back.

Before anything comes off

We test and record the system while it is still working. Open-circuit voltages, string currents, insulation resistance, inverter status and recent generation data. If a fault appears after the refit, that record is the difference between diagnosing it and arguing about it.

Then the array is photographed in detail: panel positions relative to the tile courses, string configuration, which panel connects to which, where the cable enters the loft, and how it was clipped and routed. Older arrays rarely have a wiring diagram that matches reality.

Panels are labelled as they come off. A module refitted into a different string position can put a mismatched panel into a series circuit that was previously balanced.

Isolation and safety

Photovoltaic modules produce DC whenever there is light on them. There is no off switch on the array itself, which means an exposed connector on a scaffold is live on any daylight day.

We isolate at the inverter and at the array, lock off where other trades are working, and make disconnected connectors safe rather than leaving them loose. Where the array is being stored on site, panels go face down or on edge in a stillage, out of the way of a roofer’s feet and a wheelbarrow.

Storage

Panels are surprisingly robust in the plane of the glass and surprisingly vulnerable at the frame corners. Stacked flat on a hard surface, they crack. Leaned in a stack against a wall for six weeks, they bow.

We store them on edge in racks, supported at the frame, dry, and out of the way. Where a job runs long or the site cannot take them, they go off site instead. The storage arrangement is agreed before removal, not improvised on the day.

Coordination

The roofing programme drives everything. Removal has to happen after the scaffold is up and before the strip; refit has to happen after the covering is finished and before the scaffold comes down.

That last point matters more than anything else in this job. Refitting an array after the scaffold has been struck means paying for scaffolding twice. We talk to your roofer directly and fix the dates in advance.

Putting it back

The refit is a new installation on a new roof surface, and it is treated that way. New hooks or fixings into rafters, set out against the new batten gauge. New seals. Rails re-levelled — a new covering is rarely the same thickness as the old one. Cable re-clipped and re-routed, with any UV-degraded cable replaced rather than reused.

Then the system is recommissioned in full: strings tested against the pre-removal figures, insulation resistance measured, earthing verified, the inverter restarted and its settings confirmed, and monitoring checked over the following days to confirm the array is producing what it did before.

You get an Electrical Installation Certificate for the work, the before and after test results, and the photographic record. Your original MCS certificate for the installation stands; this is remedial work on an existing system rather than a new one.

Removal is usually half a day to a day; refit is similar, with the gap set by the roofing programme.

Common questions

Can my roofer just take the panels off?

They can lift the modules, but the DC side has to be isolated and made safe by someone competent to do it, and it has to be tested and recommissioned before it goes back into service. An array left disconnected on a scaffold with live DC connectors is a genuine hazard. In practice the sensible arrangement is that we handle the electrical work and the array, and the roofer handles the roof.

Will the panels go back in the same place?

Usually, and it is simplest if they do. Where the roof geometry has changed — a new dormer, an extension, a rooflight — the array is set out again against the new rafter positions and the new obstructions. That may mean a different panel count, and where it does we tell you before the refit rather than on the day.

Are the old fixings reused?

The rails and clamps usually are, if they are sound. The roof fixings themselves are not. Hooks and seals that have been weathered into a covering for a decade have done their job, and refitting a stripped roof with used fixings is a false economy. New fixings go in against the new battens and covering.

What if a panel breaks during removal?

It happens occasionally, particularly with older modules whose frames and connectors have become brittle. We handle panels carefully and store them upright and protected, but we will not pretend the risk is zero.
